At one time I had a Shabbat ritual – opening the Torah to some random page and reading from the top of the page until I felt an idea had “completed” itself. I may have read only a paragraph, or perhaps a page or two.  Then I would close the Bible, and let the words vibrate inside me until a connection was found between the verse I had just read and something that was preoccupying me at the time.

For a time, my life became too unsettled and I let this ritual die without even noticing. Only one verse remained with me, vibrant and meaningful as the day I landed on it.

Now that my life has again reached a kind of stability, I am inspired to revive this personal tradition. This blog will be a record of my reflections on my own “Parashat HaShavua” (Weekly Bible Portion or Verse), selected at random. They will not, therefore, follow the established schedule whereby the Bible is read from start to finish, week by week, beginning with the Jewish New Year (Rosh HaShana) that falls in September or October. I also cannot be sure that I will do this each and every week and there may be times when I will lapse for a while.
